30 Day Book Challenge // Day 11: A Book that Made You Laugh

Day 11: A Book that Made You Laugh

It's day 11 already! Time is flying through this challenge, and we're already onto a book that made me laugh! This seems like a category that it would be really easy to choose a book for. There are many books that make me smile. But I have to confess, I found it really hard to come up with a book off the top of my head that really made me laugh!

I resorted to looking at my bookshelves for inspiration, and as soon as I saw Bridget Jones's Diary, I knew it was the one.

For anybody who doesn't actually know the story, here's the blurb:
Meet Bridget Jones—a 30-something Singleton who is certain she would have all the answers if she could:
a. lose 7 pounds
b. stop smoking
c. develop Inner Poise

"123 lbs. (how is it possible to put on 4 pounds in the middle of the night? Could flesh have somehow solidified becoming denser and heavier? Repulsive, horrifying notion), alcohol units 4 (excellent), cigarettes 21 (poor but will give up totally tomorrow), number of correct lottery numbers 2 (better, but nevertheless useless)..."

Bridget Jones' Diary is the devastatingly self-aware, laugh-out-loud daily chronicle of Bridget's permanent, doomed quest for self-improvement — a year in which she resolves to: reduce the circumference of each thigh by 1.5 inches, visit the gym three times a week not just to buy a sandwich, form a functional relationship with a responsible adult, and learn to program the VCR.

Over the course of the year, Bridget loses a total of 72 pounds but gains a total of 74. She remains, however, optimistic. Through it all, Bridget will have you helpless with laughter, and — like millions of readers the world round — you'll find yourself shouting, "Bridget Jones is me!"
Blurb taken from Goodreads.

I originally watched the film, and thought it was hilarious. I never really gave a second thought to reading the book, as I wasn't convinced it would be my thing. However, when I found a copy really cheap in a charity shop, I decided to give it a go. I'm really glad I did!

The reason the book is so enjoyable is that it's just so damn relatable. We feel under pressure today to have everything together, from our weight to our love life to our career prospects. The problem is, it is never that simple! Bridget is a character that really captures what we're all thinking sometimes. She's messy and bitter and silly and I think she's one of the most realistic characters I've ever read about.

The book is written in the form of Bridget's diary entries, which is a style that, as I've said many times before, I absolutely adore. It makes it so easy to read, and so much funnier! The second book in the series, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is just as amazing, although I wasn't as keen on Mad About the Boy

If you're looking for a lighthearted read with a loveable character, I'd recommend Bridget to everyone.
