30 Day Book Challenge // Day 19: A Guilty Pleasure

Day 19: A Guilty Pleasure

It's day 19, and today we're thinking about guilty pleasures!

I read a lot of fiction that is so bad it's good, but I knew for this one, I had to choose The Selection series.

I've talked about The Selection a lot in my time, but for those of you who don't know what the series is about, here's the blurb for the first book:

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself—and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
Blurb taken from Goodreads.

In case it isn't clear, this is like a dystopian The Bachelor.  Now, that's not for everybody, which I really appreciate, but it's just the right amount of fluffy, fantasy, princessy narrative, and it's a series that I pick up when I need a break, or some comfort.

I just think you can't beat a good love story, and that's what this story is built around. It's nice to be able to root for people to get together, and this, as it was centered around a competition, made that just so much more exciting.

On top of that, it has real dystopian elements, and sits in a totally different world to what we know. It's by no means a perfect series, or a fantastic piece of literature, but I think it's beautiful and I'm not ashamed to say I absolutely love it!
